This disease impairs quality of life, as well as reduces life expectancy (400,000 premature deaths occur annually as a result of excessive weight, poor diet and inactivity). We now know that morbid obesity fosters and aggravates other weight related illnesses. For example, in females, there are often complications during pregnancy, labor and delivery. The incidence of breast cancer is greater. Menstrual problems occur routinely. For these and other reasons, depression and psychological issues are commonly associated with morbid obesity.

Problems other than medical or emotional may exist, such as social and occupational discrimination, lower socio-economic status, accident proneness and decreased freedom of movement.
