In order to avoid unrealistic expectations and to properly assess the risks and complications associated with weight loss surgery, it is imperative for you to receive appropriate education and training. NeWeigh believes that education empowers you, and we have put our beliefs into practice. To enable you to make an informed, rather than an emotional decision, your physician will define the various treatment modalities, including the possible complications, risks and benefits of each. Before moving forward, the potential of failure to lose weight, dumping syndrome, other gastro-intestinal disorders, the possible need for additional corrective surgeries, and the possibility of death are discussed and clearly disclosed.
For further emphasis, you will be given, and required to read or view, various materials pertaining to these issues. We will ask you to complete questionnaires that will help us correct any of your misconceptions. The informed consent and disclosures that you will be given are very specific in detailing the surgical risks. You will be encouraged to discuss these elements in detail with your surgeon. An exit interview will be conducted to conclude your physician consultation. At that time, which is well in advance of surgery, you will be given copies of all signed forms, including the Informed Consent Agreement.
Additionally, your attendance in pre-surgical support group meetings will give you a clear understanding of the life-style changes that are needed in order to assure long-term weight loss success.
