Patient selection is absolutely critical. To be considered for weight loss surgery, you must first meet the guidelines established by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), as well as those of the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). If you do not meet the criteria of these authorities, you are not an acceptable candidate for the NeWeigh Program.
Having met the initial guidelines, you will need additional screening as required by your healthcare provider and insurance company. For your protection, certain diagnostic testing and medical clearances (mental health evaluations, nutritional counseling, diagnostic and pre-operative testing) will need to be performed. NeWeigh will assist you with this screening process.
Furthermore, equally important in the patient selection process is your motivation and willingness to commit to long term follow-up and participation in aftercare support. For this reason, and unlike many bariatric programs, NeWeigh does not solicit patients from other geographical locations. We know that distance makes this critical follow-up and continuity of care difficult, thereby, reducing your prospect for a successful outcome. This is just one example of the many ways in which NeWeigh puts your wellbeing first.
By satisfying the patient selection process, your appropriateness for weight loss surgery will be clearly and decisively illustrated. Medical necessity, as documented by NeWeigh and its affiliated physician providers, includes your medical history, family medical history, diet history, co-morbid conditions, medications, prior hospitalizations and surgeries. Results of diagnostic screening, photographs and weigh-ins at each pre-operative visit also validate your suitability for the Program.
