The LAP-BAND® System is a restrictive procedure, only; the stomach pouch is made smaller, thereby restricting the volume of food intake.

With the LAP-BAND® System Procedure:

  • A band is placed around the upper end of the stomach, creating a small pouch and a narrow passage into the larger remaining portion of the stomach.
  • The band can be adjusted to control the amount of restriction.
  • The band does not interfere with the normal digestion process.

After surgery, small amounts of food quickly fill the newly created stomach pouch, resulting in a feeling of fullness. The small passage delays the emptying of food which occurs through the opening near the bottom of the pouch. Once food passes through the opening, normal digestion occurs.

This restrictive procedure causes the patient to become satiated quickly, which in turn triggers the desire to discontinue eating. Weight loss is achieved as a result.
